The water is warmer in Hawaii mainly because of the wind. Most islands have winds that shift in all directions throughout different seasons.

Hawaii however, is among Trade Winds, and these blow towards the West throughout the entire year.

The Trade Winds make the water warmer, by transferring warm water (that has been warmed by the sun) towards Asia.

The temperature of the ocean in Hawaii is generally warm, but they do differ a few degrees between the different islands. 

The ocean in Honolulu, for example, is the temperature of a heated swimming pool all year round! The temperature may fluctuate over the year, but only by around 5 degrees F. 

From January to April, the temperature of the water on this island is a steady 76 degrees F. This temperature increases from July, through to October, before dropping again by around November. 

At Hilo, the water stays at an even steadier temperature, varying only around 3 degrees F throughout the year.

The temperature will reach its highest in August/September, before dropping slightly again in November. 

How Warm Is The Water In Maui? 

Maui is the second most visited island in Hawaii, so it is only fair to discuss the water temperatures of this island. 

You’ll be happy to know that Maui waters are not far off from the ones discussed above. 

During the warmer months, the water will be around 77 to 80 degrees F. This is usually between June and November. 

Throughout the colder months of December to May, the water will feel cooler, but only because the air is cooler. The water temperature during these months will only drop slightly, to around 74 to 76 degrees.

When discussing water temperatures, it is important to note that our bodies react differently to the temperature in the water than it does to the temperature in the air.

Our bodies are much more sensitive to water temperatures. A few degrees difference in the air may not be too noticeable, but water that has dropped a few degrees in temperature can really make a difference. 

This is because of the transfer of heat. If your body is at a temperature that is higher than your surroundings, (water or air), then you will be giving off heat.

• Temperatures of around 79 degrees F and below are normally very warm, with people being able to spend extended periods of time in the water without feeling cold or uncomfortable.
