For many people, Hawaii is their dream vacation destination. The Aloha State isn’t the only nickname associated with these beautiful islands, a lot of people actually call them Paradise, and it is easy to see why. 

With golden beaches, clear water, and the opportunity to escape from the hustle and bustle of city life, what attracts people to Hawaii is different for everyone.

But no matter what attracts you to this beautiful place, there is no denying that Hawaii is an outstanding holiday destination. 

However, before you book your trip, it is likely that you want to know how safe Hawaii is.

Danger is something that most people will research before booking a trip. So, if you want to find out if Hawaii is dangerous, keep on reading!

Is Hawaii Dangerous?

So, let’s cut right to the chase and find out if Hawaii is dangerous. Overall, no, Hawaii isn’t dangerous.

Around 1 million people live in Hawaii, so despite its beautiful nature, there are a lot of people who reside there too.

There is safety in numbers, and the amount of people definitely does help make the Hawaiian islands safer. 

However, that aside, Hawaii is still considered a safe place. In fact, Hawaii is considered to be one of the safest areas in the whole of the United States.

But, nowhere is perfect, and there are some areas of Hawaii that are more dangerous than others. In particular, if you are a tourist visiting Hawaii, you should avoid the following places:

  • Wahiawa
  • Pahoa
  • Waianae
  • Ewa Beach 
  • Hilo
  • Kapaa
  • Waimea
  • Waipahu
  • Kahului
  • Makana

Some of these areas aren’t the safest for tourists because there are opportunists that will take advantage of tourists in these areas.

As such, there is a higher risk of theft. Additionally, some of these areas simply aren’t the best for tourists because there isn’t anything there to do or see.

They aren’t dangerous, they just simply aren’t worth visiting.  

Is Hawaii Dangerous At Night?

There are lots of places around the world that are safe during the day, but dangerous during the night. So, is Hawaii one of these places?

No, Hawaii is not dangerous at night! Hawaii is one of few places that is just as safe during the night time as it is during the day.

Of course, there are some areas of Hawaii that are more dangerous at night, in particular the ocean that surrounds the islands, and the dense areas of rain forest on the islands.

However, most of the tourist locations in Hawaii are just as safe at night as they are during the day.

Is There Anything Dangerous In Hawaii?

One thing that a lot of people consider when contemplating traveling to Hawaii is the danger that wildlife might pose.

As Hawaii is well-known for the beautiful nature there, it is understandable that you might worry about the threat that animals could have on your trip. 

Thankfully, there are no large predators in Hawaii. So, you do not need to worry about encountering any bears or wolves on your trip.

Additionally, there aren’t any dangerous snakes that reside in Hawaii, so you don’t need to worry about these either.

There are a number of insects that reside in Hawaii, but generally these aren’t a problem.

Likely the most dangerous animal you will encounter during your trip is a jellyfish. 

However, there are some plants that can cause irritation if you come into contact with them when hiking.

Likewise, Hawaii is prone to flash floods, rockfalls and strong currents which could be dangerous.

But, you usually don’t need to worry about this during your trip, and if there is a risk of flash floods or strong currents, you will typically be made aware of this by the locals.

Is There A lot of Crime In Hawaii?

Before you travel anywhere, you likely research what crime rates are like in that area.

Nowhere is perfect, and pretty much everywhere in the world will have crime at a certain level. But is there a lot of crime in Hawaii?

In short, no, there isn’t a lot of crime in Hawaii. Hawaii has relatively low crime rates, especially when you compare it to some other popular holiday destinations.

Year on year, the crime levels in Hawaii are reducing, and Hawaii is one of only 15 States to see this happen.

On top of this, the violent crime rate in Hawaii is only 2.5 incidents per 1,000 people. This is significantly below the national average of 4 incidents per 1,000 people.

The majority of crime that does take place in Hawaii is theft and property crime. There are instances of violent crime and gun violence too.

But, when the rates are compared to the rates for other areas of the US, the crime rates in Hawaii are much lower than elsewhere.

The area of Hawaii that has the highest crime rates is the island of Maui.

Summary

In short, no, Hawaii isn’t dangerous! While there are some dangers in Hawaii, overall this is a safe area to visit, with low crime rates and no large predators or snakes.

So, if you want to visit Hawaii, you can rest assured that it is a safe place to be.
