Today we are going to learn if you can take a boat to Hawaii. Hawaii is an island country in the Pacific Ocean, located about 8,000 miles west of the mainland United States.

It consists of eight main islands and hundreds of smaller ones. The most famous island is called Oahu which means “the gathering place”.

We understand that not everyone is a fan of flying, which makes things difficult getting to Hawaii considering how far out it is from the mainland USA.

So what other options do you have? Can you go by sea? Let’s find out.

The first thing you want to know before taking a boat to Hawaii is whether you need a visa.

That is because some countries require their citizens to get visas; others don’t. For example, US citizens don’t usually need visas but they might be asked for one at the airport.

Can You Take A Boat To Hawaii?

The short answer is yes, you can take a boat from the mainland United States to Hawaii. The long answer is that it’s possible but not easy.

Some ships operate on certain routes, and they depart from San Francisco or Los Angeles California and head towards Honolulu, Hawaii.

This route would take them around 7-7.5 days depending on weather conditions and distance between ports. They charge anywhere from $3,500-$6,000 per person.

What Are The Different Types Of Boats?

If you decide to take a boat to Hawaii you should consider booking with a reputable company. Some companies may try to scam you into paying more money upfront.

Others may overcharge you once you reach your destination.

If you book with a reputable company then you won’t have any problems. You will also be able to choose from different types of boats. Here are the different types of boats:

Cruise Ships

These are large passenger vessels that can accommodate thousands of passengers.

They tend to be very luxurious and feature several restaurants, swimming pools, spas, gyms, casinos, shops, theaters, lounges, and even nightclubs.

Yachts

These are similar to cruise ships except they are typically smaller and only hold a few dozen people. They tend to cost less than cruise ships.

Passenger Vessels

These are small ships that carry fewer than 50 passengers. They are cheaper than cruise ships.

Traveling To Hawaii By Cruise Ship

Can You Take A Boat To Hawaii?

A cruise ship is probably the best way to travel to Hawaii. If you book with a reputable tour operator then you shouldn’t run into any problems. However, there are some downsides as well.

First, you will likely spend quite a bit of time on board the ship. Second, you will be confined to the ship during your trip.

Third, you won’t be able to explore much when you arrive in Hawaii.

When you book a cruise ship vacation you will be assigned a cabin. Each cabin has its bathroom, shower, sink, bed, refrigerator, TV, and so on.

You will also have access to all the amenities onboard such as the gym, pool, spa, casino, theater, and restaurant.

Traveling To Hawaii By Yacht

You could also book a yacht if you prefer to stay closer to shore.

Most yachts come equipped with everything you need including a kitchen, dining room, lounge area, bathrooms, and bedrooms.

You will also have the option of choosing where you want to dock.

There are pros and cons to traveling by yacht. On the plus side, you will be able to explore more while you are in port.

Plus, you will have the opportunity to visit other islands along the way.

On the downside, you will need to pay for fuel, food, and other supplies. Also, you will be limited to what you can do within the confines of the vessel.

Traveling To Hawaii By Passenger Vessel

You could also book passage aboard a passenger’s vessel. These are usually smaller than cruise ships and larger than yachts.

Passengers often share cabins. You will also have to pay for your meals and fuel.

The advantage of taking a passenger’s vessel is that you will be able to visit many places along the way.

You will also be allowed to disembark at various locations.

Are There Cruises That Depart From Hawaii?

Some cruises leave from Hawaii. However, these cruises are operated by companies like Royal Caribbean, Princess Cruises, Carnival Cruise Lines, and Norwegian Cruise Line.

These cruise lines offer itineraries that include stops in the different Hawaiian Islands. But there isn’t much variety when it comes to cruises departing from Hawaii.

How Much Does It Cost To Go By Sea?

It depends on where you are coming from. If you are coming from Canada then you will pay less than CAD 1,000.

If you are coming in through New York City then expect to pay between $2,000 and $4,000.

Final Thoughts

It depends on how long you plan to stay in Hawaii.

If you plan to spend just one day or two then it might not matter which type of boat you use, and a cruise ship would be a great option.

However, if you plan to spend a few weeks in Hawaii then you should consider booking a passenger’s vessel.

This will give you plenty of opportunities to enjoy the island paradise.
